Known as the masters of the sea, the ancient Phoenicians were the dominant maritime power around 12th century BCE, being first to venture from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. The mountainous topography of their homeland encouraged them to expand seaward, instead of inland. They became expert sailors and traders who explored the Mediterranean basin and beyond by relying on celestial observations, landmarks on coastlines, and dead-reckoning to reach their destination. This print is inspired by the nautical Portolan maps created in the 1500s and the early adventurous routes of the Phoenician explorers throughout the Mediterranean sea.
